MDC NewsMDC'S Julie Doyle Heads Up Texas Gulf Surfing AssociationMDC is proud to announce that co-owner Julie Doyle has secured the position of President of TGSA. First on her agenda was to secure new sponsors for the 2010 season. "I could not have done this hard work without a great Board Of Directors who all volunteer their time including me, for this wonderful organization. After the board's unanimous vote to leave Surfing America, it was time for TGSA to strike out on a new path. That being said, a new program was hatched and alot of ground had to be covered." Part of TGSA's new direction included a Pro Am division at every open contest this season, but the BIG NEWS was a chance to team up with Eastern Surfing Association, the world's largest amatuer surfing organization with 10,000 members. "ESA called up and TGSA was more than happy to work up a special event for our competitors. After much discussion and debate, the East Coast Scolastics/Pro Championships was born. It's a great opportunity for Texas surfers to go over to New Smyrna, Fla and shine. Plus, we're offering a $5,000 prize purse as well as $5,000 in scholarship money! The city of New Smyrna has really stepped up hosting a Food Festival friday night for the competitors with live bands. Computerized scoring, ASP judging, this is going to be HISTORY making for TGSA, especially when we host it next year. For more information visit http://www.surftgsa.org
MDC TEAM RIDER JON STEELE PUTS THE RPQ TO THE TEST AT T STREETJon is not a big fan of T Street, but that is EXACTLY the point of the RPQ. You like it anywhere you go!!

MDC RIDERS SHINE AT VOLCOM BUSHFISH QUALIFIERCongratultions to Bubba Gainan for taking 2nd in the Pro, Zach May taking 3rd in Pro, Jordan Isbell for taking 1st in Women. Kyle Ferris, 1st in Jr's. IT'S OFFICIAL!! THE RPQ HAS BEEN PATENTED!! THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN 35 YEARS THAT A SURFBOARD HAS BEEN PATENTED!! The Rocket Propelled Quad is a trademark name and the bottom channels of the board are officially patented. MDC FEATURED IN ESM BOARD FORUM-TRAVEL ISSUE AUG 09ESM TRAVEL ISSUE/ BOARD FORUM ISSUE is available at the shop. MDC RPQ is featured in the Forum. Come by and see what the east coast. They have a HUGE scene, produce amazing talent, and it's a great mag!! To quote Chris Warren manager of "The Goods Surf and Skate" which is located in Fla and owned by CJ and Damien Hobgood: "The RPQ made it easy to do a real turn in the crappiest part of the wave and flew through the flat spots, super fun to ride!!" CJ's little brother took off with the other one. Too funny!! Little brothers, you gotta love em. MDC GETS SELECTED BY TOUR TEXAS TO BE IN THEIR UPCOMING SERIESPretty exicting stuff that's for sure. We were honored when a film crew of 10 entered our shop last Saturday. They had it all, a director, writers, producers, mic boom guy, which was on a long boom with a huge fuzzy microphone, even the guy with a clapboard with the date/time, movie title, etc. in your face when the director says, "Rolling...................and cut, and that's a wrap!! Super fun, if not a little nerve racking. Here is a shot of part of the crew. The guys in the back are the boom mic and the clapboard marker.
MDC STEPS UP AND CREATES A NEW PRO WAKESURF TEAMPro Waksurfer Bubba Gainan approached us a while back about our designs, his ideas and getting them together to form a union. We've known Bubba for years through his competitive years in TGSA when Julie Doyle (now President of TGSA) was a judge. Mike shaped him a sik fish back in the day which he still has. What came out of Bubba and Mike's collaboration in the shaping bay is ONE HOT WAKESURF DESIGN. It is called the BG RHINO and dealer orders are being taken as we speak. Bubba states, "Hands down it is the best board I have ever ridden and I am landing vicious airs at a frantic pace!" The team will consist of Bubba Gainan, Shane Wiggins, Justin Jalufka, and Nick Mackrizz. Each team member will have their own design which will create a nice selection for our dealers. We are super excited to see where this new path will lead us and can't wait to get in the competition game!
CONGRATULATIONS TO CASEY RYAN FOR GRADUATING FROM SOCAL COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRYCasey has been residng in San Diego working hard towards her degree and now she is a Doctor in the field of Optometry! MDC RIDERS ZACH MAY AND JUSTIN JALUFKA PREPARE FOR MAINLAND MEXZach and Justin are taking separate trips, but will be meeting up at "you know where". The swell forecast looks solid. We scored on the pictures and videos from these two last year tearing it up on their MDC's. Can't wait to see the shots when they get back!! Here's a little reminder of last year:
MDC BUILDS BOARD IN LOVING MEMORY OF POODIE LOCKEI have known Poodie for 30 years. He worked for Willie Nelson for 35 years as Willie's stage manager. Last weekend we had a memorial concert benefit for Poodie in Austin, and this board was in the silnet auction. Other items donated were a NY Yankees uniform signed by longtime friend Goose Gossage, Coach Darryl Royal donated a champion UT football, a signed fiddle from Charlie Daniels among others. We were honored to be apart of this very special day. I saw many longtime friends I have accumulated from all over the world and the event raised $60,000.
Above right: Waylon Payne kicks off the show with the Star Spangled Banner. I've known Waylon since he was 12. He is the son of Jody Payne; Willie's longtime guitar player and legendary singer Sammy Smith. He played Jerry Lee Lewis in Walk The Line and is starting another film Sept 6 on location in North Carolina. He is a talented actor and musician. We had alot of fun and alot of catching up to do that day!! NEW SickSurfReport Phone Number: 361.93S.WELL (937.9355)New ad in ESM. Our third ad is out in ESM. We are very stoked to have a presence on the East Coast, along with 2 RPQ's loading up in the Billabong container bound for Tahiti for the Hobgoods.
Surf Expo 09 Orange Count Convention Center Orlando, FLWork hard each day networking your product, attending appointments for the store to view products, and then at 4pm getting down with everyone in sight with cold beer and cocktails makes for one tired crew after the 3 day event, but it was definitley worth it. Load in is crazy; fork lifts all going off, everyone in their space installing their display. Hearing an occassional wall fall was pretty funny. We were super blessed to be placed in a spot we referred to as "Soul Center". Everyone else was hooked together in rows. Our booths were all free standing without neighbors. To our right, Bill Stewart and across from us, Dan Taylor, and to the left, Ben Aipa with the builders display case in the middle. With the bulk of the industry concentrating on materials right now, we had the R.P.Q, which is all about new design. Enjoy the pictorial!!

Alana helps James from Stewart break down. above right: Alana with Stewart freight, while Dan Taylor and Don look on. So many shapers loading out product. Surf Tech loaded in 100 and loaded out 92. Is it a sign of the times for surfshop owners? Or, is it a sign of the times that today it is really all about the CUSTOM SURFBOARD? Having to ship eveything back really broke some guys. We drove, so we had no worries. That's how we ended up with Dan's stock. We just couldn't sit there and let Dan stress on it, so we offered to bring it to Texas for him. He is stoked and his product is top knotch. They look hot in the racks at the shop. MDC Now Building Custom Stand Up Paddle BoardsYes, the blanks are ordered from US Blanks and we are currently taking custom orders for SUP's. Our prices are very reasonable so if you have been wanting to get into this killer sport, but the prices made you shy away, you now have a choice!! Let There Be RocketThe owners at Line Up were so stoked witht he R.P.Q., the owner ordererd one and they featured the design in the reccommended CONSUME section. We were very honored to be the only builder featured in this section of the mag. Drop by the shop and pick one up free of charge. The first block should be here by the end of the week. Sponsored Rider Kyle Ferris Invited To Train in Cali with US Team by Coach Joey BuranTwo time Pipeline Master winner and new US Team Coach Joey Buran invited Kyle to come out and train with the US Team during an intensive training camp held the week of Sept 29, 2008. They had a team house at 54th St in Newport and based out of there surfing Hungtington, La Jolla, Oceanside, and catching EPIC Newport. We can't wait to see what he learned out there applied to the first contest coming up at the CC Open next weekend at Bob Hall Pier. New From Mike Doyle Custom Surfboards: Introducing The Rocket Propelled QuadWe have been working on this new design line for some time now in conjunction with Flatstalker creator Roy Sanders. Nextcame months of R&D in the water in various conditions. The R.P.Q.’s performance exceeded all expectations. The coolest thing we discovered is that the R.P.Q. is not limited on design. Fish, longboard, shortie, whatever; the R.P.Q. is all about enhancement. We are so committed to the design of the R.P.Q., we invested in and have filed for pantent and trademark protection. The TM is filed already, patent pending. So just what is the R.P.Q.? This particular design features a double barrel deep channel through the quads. These channels produce incredible bursts of speed and insane tail lift for airs. MDC will now be offering all things Rocket Propelled Quad. Stop by and check them out. The longboard R.P.Q. is insane! Be looking for the R.P.Q. in the design forum in Surfer Mag. You can also check our website at mikdoylecustomsurfboards.com. Click on the RocketPropelledQuad link for more.

Molly Ware is stoked to have her new board, a trip to Ticla, and to hang out with Nicole Dodson who is home visiting from Hawaii for Christmas. Life is good! New Alva Decks InWhy do we deal directly with Alva Skates? Tony doesn't believe in mass production and neither do we. Mass production is a real bummer to the surf industry. It did wonders for the spinach industry. Plus, dealing with Alva Skates is NEVER boring. There are only 10 new decks in stock, so come by and check them out. Tony Alva Celebrates 1 Year AnniversaryWe'd like to congratulate Tony on his first year at the Fairfax store. We were really honored to recieve an invitation to this event. Due to the opening of our new location we were unable to attend. He is also celebrating his new shoe coming out by Van's. Everbody said the shop wouldn't make it, hence the chosen artwork for the invitation. Don't ever tell him he can't do something... ![]() Sponsored Rider Morgan Faulkner Advances at Excel Pro/2006 Sunset Beach, HASponsored rider Morgan Faulkner made it through round 2 today at the Excel Pro 2006 at Sunset Beach, Hawaii. In Round 1, one of his best scoring waves made the highlight loop. In Round 2 he landed a nice floater and pulled an air. The wind was on it and it it was pretty rough but by Round 3 it had glassed off and the sets were inconsistent. He had a tough heat with: IZUKI TANAKA JPN IAN WALSH HAW GABRIEL VILLARAN PER MORGAN FAULKNER HAW Ian Walsh won this event last year and Tanaka was on. Morgan still managed to stay deeper than the pack, and took 3rd beating out Peruvian Villaran. He placed 33 out of 132 Pro's and won $700. This should bump him up well in rankings on the WQS. WAY TO GO MORGAN!!! Sponsorship News: WQS Competitor Morgan Faulkner Signs on to MDC Roster Morgan and Justin check out their new guns at this year's sponsor sign in.This has been discussed for some time now, but just actually took place today. We are very honored and super stoked to have Morgan riding our boards on the WQS, and on the North Shore which is where he resides when he's not on tour, or running Quicksilver Surf Camps in the summer here. Wow, this guy stays busy! Mike made Morgan his first board back when he was a young grom. Mike knew he was going somewhere even then. Mike says, "that kid surfed everday, rain, cold, blowing, sunshine, big, ugly, whatever. In the winter, I would go down to the beach at lunchtime to eat and check the surf and there'd be Morgan, the only one out, with his mom, Mary on the beach in a rain poncho!" It is that kind of determination that makes a champion and when you throw in natural athletic talent, and a great attitude, the possibilities are endless. We are looking forward a great surfer/shaper relationship with Morgan and a really fun run this year. Julie Doyle Every Sponsored MDC Rider Places At State ChanpionshipsCongratulations to Our Guys for ALL placing high at the TGSA State Championships held this weekend at South Padre. The TGSA got to send one 15 yr old trialist to compete for a slot on the USA Surf Team and we sent Justin Thompson. Even though Justin didn't make the Team, Peter Townend, the Coach, had several positive things to say about him during the Surfing America meeting I attended earlier this week. Limited Chambered Balsa Blanks In From EquadorWe now have in stock very rare chambered balsa blanks in from Equador. They are beautiful and have excellent rockers. We are so stoked and cannot wait to get started! These blanks are great for wallhangers of course, but in this village where they are made the Equadorians can't afford wall-hangers so these boards get the heck ridden out of them and the maker still guarantees them for 5 years. Each blank takes 2 trees and 2 more trees are replanted and they are mature in 3-5 years. Balsa is a fiercly self-renewing resource. If you are interested in having a genuine custom balsa in you quiver you better hurry. Stock is very limited and we will only be offering this once a year!
Congratulations to our sponsored rider Jorden Isbell!Congratulations to sponsored rider Jordan Isbell for sweeping the TGSA North District contest last weekend! Jordan took 1st in girls, jr women, and women!
Congratulations also to my daugther, Alana Greenwood for taking 2nd in micro-groms!|| MDC Riders dominate at VolcomVolcom Bushfish Pro-Am was held Halloween weekend at Bob Hall Pier. This year proved to be a bigger, better event. TGSA judges were used and they had a record amount of entries. Surfers duked it out all day in fickle surf, but it was in the finals where the gloves came off. A big "Way to go, bro" goes off to all our riders who dominated the finals: Trey Camp- 4th, Logan Norton-5th, Steven Vizuete-6th, all in Jr. Men. Jordan Isbell-1st, Heather Mc Gaffin-2nd, both in women's and Justin Jalufka who won 1st in the Pro-AM. Jordan Isbell advanced through her heats all day and took home lots of Volcom booty. As if those JEL guys weren't busy enough with the recent release of Good Fortune, they are slamming the scene again with the unveiling of a new surf mag titled Tx SURFER. We were allowed a sneak peek, and judging by the photos we saw, this mag promises to be edgy and fresh. We really want to keep this alive and we all know how hard it is to go to press 3-4 times a year, so please support TX SURFER. You'll be able to get it here.
JEL Productions premiered it's second film at The Executive Surf Club last night and the place went off. Supagreen kicked it off at 7pm and got everyone in the mood with their cool urban reggae riffs. No doubt, they were a perfect choice. Then everybody refueled at the bar and the movie kicked on around 8pm. We want to thank JEL and Our Guys for kicking some major butt in this film. G. Scott had an excellent slide sequence which also showcased our riders in a major way. Good Fortune is available here at the shop for $25.

What a weekend, what a contest. Surf was coming on Saturday, and then light offshore winds to no wind on Sunday, while the size held. Rainy on Saturday, then overcast skies on Sunday gave the judges' eyesight a break. Great photo opportunities were everywhere. I spent the weekend on the judges stand and couldn't shoot much. We missed ya, G.! The surf on Sunday was mesmerizing.
